West Sydney is arguably the Mecca of urban music in Australia. It’s also one of the most culturally diverse regions in the country – if not the world – and it’s where rising star CANDICE was born and raised. A Soprano Vocalist with roots in Polynesian Soul and Reggae due to her Maori heritage; Afrobeat and Dancehall have also influenced Candice’s art.
This fusion of these genres, in addition to traditional Hip- Hop and R&B, has resulted in a sound unlike anything else released locally. CANDICE is proud to be a Sydney born Maori /Australian & continues to support her people & champion her ancestors on both sides. A passionate songwriter who co-wrote every track of her anticipated album, CANDICE’s survival story is reflected in her songs.
After a promising start as a younger artist opening for acts including Boyz II Men and LL Cool J on local tours, and Aotearoa’s Nesian Mystik , Ardijah & Katchafire. After working with homegrown Aussie rappers like Mitchos Da Menace, Fortay At Large, & hearing her music played on radio stations like The Edge 96.1, CANDICE entered a darker period in her life.
She found herself in an abusive relationship that resulted in battles with anxiety, depression and a period of illicit drug use, with the gift of music her salvation to turn her life around. From the moment she put herself first again, CANDICE headed into the studio with acclaimed Sydney producers Project Peters & DJ Sefru, Marvin Bangs & highly respected Nigerian Producer B’Cole who helped to craft her raw and experimental sound.
With the co-sign of local talents like Kenyonn Brown, Mistah Mez , Chanje, Terro Dee and the support of industry veterans like engineer Steve “Espa” Petridis , DJ Sefru & Peters Productions, CANDICE is a quintessential West Sydney artist who epitomizes the region’s tenacity, grit and creative output.
