Heartfelt tributes have flown online for a man who was stabbed to death outside a Melbourne CBD hotel this morning.
Machar Kot, 21, has been identified as the stabbing victim attacked after a fight erupted outside Oaks hotel on Market Street.
He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition, but later died from injuries.
Devastated loved ones took to social media today to farewell the young man “taken too soon”.
“Rest in Paradise, gone way too young and way too soon,” one person wrote.
“I’m speechless brother. I don’t know what to say, I hope you are in a better place,” another tribute said.
Police said they were called to the CBD street following reports the man had been attacked about 5am.
Witness Steven described how a fight broke out between a gang of up to 12 men prior to the incident, with the group seen wielding knives.
He claimed he later saw a “pool of blood” at the scene, with the victim’s jacket “ripped to sundown”.
“He was bleeding, yeah he was not in a well state,” he told 9News.
“I was quite shocked.”
Police said the offenders fled the scene before they arrived.
“Detectives are in the very early stages of the investigation and are piecing together what has taken place including whether those involved are known to each other,” Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said.
The Oaks hotel in a statement confirmed the victim was a not a guest of the hotel, nor was he on the premises at any stage.
“Police were called immediately, and the man was rushed to hospital,” a hotel spokesperson said.
“The team at Oaks Melbourne on Market Hotel is assisting authorities with their enquiries in every way possible.
“Oaks remains committed to ensuring the safety and protection of all its guests and has a zero-tolerance policy to any criminal activity or violence taking place on its premises.”
