Music is a universal language. It evokes emotion and has the power to transform the mind. It is common to the average human to respond to the basic stimuli of sound. As creatures, we use our senses to perceive the world, our hearing can be crucial to survival and understanding our environments, from pleasure and opportunity to threats and immediate danger.
As human beings, we are wired to respond to what evokes our senses. We are often emotionally triggered to respond in a certain way when our brains receive information that either fits in with, or challenges our beliefs. Therefore, it should not be surprising that studies have found that music, such as Mozart, has been found to have a significant impact on the way we feel, lighting up the brains “reward centre”, often triggered by pleasurable stimuli such as chocolate or alcohol. African cultures live and breathe music. It is our way of life.
