Ashaiman-based Ghanaian dancehall icon Stonebwoy, has drawn inspiration from Patapaa’s controversial lyrical flow, and released a new banger titled Putuu (pray). Indeed, Patapaa’s legacy lives on.
Putuu took the Ghanaian social media space by storm when its audio version was released on July 20, 2020. As we speak today, the Putuu freestyle is trending on YouTube at the #3 spot.
The song was released in response to popular requests. And surprisingly, it’s a smash hit — even though the lyrical content has greatly deviated from Stonebwoy’s usual words of wisdom.
How Does the Putuu Song Go Like?
He who has music ears, let him/her listen!
In the first 3 opening verses Stonebwoy sings —
“Yeeah yeh yehh yea yeah Samputuuu ma putuuu Samputuuu ma p3twee Sampataa ma zukuuu W3ng3 d3naa d3sh33”
“Walobi odobbi mommolobbi annya baddi Walobbi dogogyi andabody zi andabody eeh tolobi tobody zi ombogoddi zi ontwokobbi eeh Wonobbi chokobbi wanchokoddi baa waa waa waa”
“Samputuu ma p3ch3 Samputuu ma puchuuu Samputuuu ma puch)) sanka zanya puchuu Samputuuu ma kpekp3 Samputuu na pupuu Samputuu ma kpekp3 k3 wuu oo eh zegede!”
Well, as you can see — the above lyrics are packed with tongue-twisters. The same is true for all the remaining verses. Without doing proper rehearsals, the average person may not be able to recite the jargon without saying something else.
Despite the lyrical “emptiness” of the song, Putuu is making waves all over the place.
The following are some interesting reactions and comments Putuu is gaining on social media.
Pebihwe TV— After COVID 19 is over we are all going to celebrate with this song thumbs up👍 if u agree.
Adepa— Patapaa was supposed to be on this track 😂😂 who else agreed with me? Bhim Fans Let’s Jam here. 🕺
Ziggy— In fact, BHIM, was just testing the mike ooo and Gh has come to like it…hahahaha. it’s all good, when people love u, anything goes….BHIM!!!!
Eryckjeep— Who else also thinks Stonebwoy was just joking in the studio and the joke has become a hit?
If the Putuu verses are not from the Ewe language, then Stonebwoy is clearly speaking in tongues.
So, what’s the meaning or important message behind the crazy beat, and the repetitive jargon? To answer that question, you need to study the chorus.
The hook of the song captures the following meaningful lines.
“Pray Pray Pray! E go better!”
Overall, the Putuu song seems to encourage us to stick to prayer during these hard times of Covid-19. For it shall be well, no matter what.
In conclusion, the most interesting thing about Putuu is how Stonebwoy accurately mimicked Patapaa’s scopatumana-styled lyrics. If this is what it takes to produce a hit song, then the Ghana music industry will only get exciting. Let’s wait for the official video of Putuu.
